This Norwegian brand's designs are often inspired by rugged explorers and sportsmen of old, but as far as we know this is the first piece that they've created for a fictional character. With a hat-tip to Phileas Fogg from Around the World in Eighty Days, it's their take on the classic fishtail parka. But because it's Amundsen, and they like to go over and above, this one's engineered to withstand whatever a round-the-world trip might throw at you – whether you're travelling by steamship, elephant, or sail-powered sledge. Featuring fully taped seams and a roomy-cord-adjustable hood, the 3-layer waterproof blended twill-weave shell is tested to 10,000mm hydrostatic head. The zip-up front has a placket for extra protection, and the handwarmer pockets feature buttoned flaps to keep the rain out. Though its namesake undertook his great adventure in the 1870s, we reckon this one has quite a 1960s vibe – the fishtail back is a nice nod to the mid-century military parkas much loved by mods on their mopeds, while the button and loop flap closure on the front reminds us of old-school duffel coats.

Amundsen clothing is named after one of the greatest explorers ever to walk the Earth. No pressure there then. In fact, the company’s co-founder, Jørgen Amundsen, is a relative of the legendary man himself, and the brand’s designs are based on classic styles from the golden age of exploration. Throw in a generous dash of 1960s Nordic ski resort chic and you’ve got a unique range of good-looking kit that’ll get you noticed in all the right ways.
However, there’s nothing old-fashioned about the way Amundsen’s gear performs. Ruggedly built from merino wool and waterproof triple-layer cotton, these are serious expedition-grade garments built for a Scandi outdoor culture – a concept that the Norwegians call ‘friluftsliv’, or ‘open-air life’. It’s the idea that time spent enjoying the freedom of the outdoors should be a core part of your life, since it enhances just about everything else. Now that’s something we can all get on board with.
